Well here we are again, the leaves are starting to bud and the local authorities are testing all the storm warning equipment, a common recurrence here in Southwest Oklahoma. Wherever you look it seems everyone is preparing for the arrival of spring and the harsh storms that come with it. Well as the saying goes, when in Rome....or when in the Southern USA, you better be a good scout and BE PREPARED!! Now all of us here know about storm preparedness (if you live here you should),but what about your homes exterior? Well you may ask, whats a homeowner to do? Lucky for you that you stopped by here, as i'm about to go over the short list.
Lets start from the top, in this case the roof of your house. Now i'm not telling anyone to actually get on your roof as that can be dangerous, (my disclaimer) but if you can get a good look from the ground, take a gander and see whats going on up there. Are there any shingles missing or raised up? Are your wind turbines covered, (they should have been) and if not are they spinning freely? All of these things if left unattended can lead to issues down the road. Now would also be a good time to check your gutters to see if they are filled with leaves or blown in debris, a strategically duct taped mirror to a broom stick might do the trick (again be careful if you get on the roof). Are the gutters firmly secured to you house?
Lets move on to your siding. Take a stroll around your home and check to see if your siding has any cracks or split caulking as these things in time lead to rotten wood and a big repair bill down the road. If you have vinyl siding, does it appear loose anywhere? How about the paint? Is it cracking or peeling, if so a paint job or at the minimum a touch up is in order. Just remember to correctly prep your siding with the proper primer before painting. This will ensure that your efforts aren't in vain, and you wont be re painting next year. Dont forget your homes hvac unit, change your filter, and check your exterior unit to be sure leaves and other debris aren't blocking its ventilation. This is just a basic rundown of a spring checkup. If your unsure about any spring preparation, feel free to just give us a call, we will be glad to give you some advice. All seniors receive a free courtesy checkup.
